Matte Satin & Semi Gloss, Choosing the Right Sheen For Hardwood Floors

What Sheen Should I Use??

Usually, a lot of thought goes into the selection of a hardwood floor for a living space, with special attention typically paid to the colour, the feel and even the texture of the flooring. Yet somehow the sheen level of hardwood flooring is left as an after thought in the selection process. The overall impact hardwood flooring will create in a space depends on a number of variables, of which colour is the most obvious, but the level of shine on the floors do make a big impact as well. Therefore, not considering the sheen level can lead to a difference between the vision for the renovations and the actual final outcome. Many homeowners do not truly understand what sheen is or the effect it will have on the overall look and the daily use of the hardwood floors. So we are going to make it simple and break it all down.

New in Store: Kentwood Urban Plank Wire Brushed Oak

To start off this week we’re really excited to let all of our followers in on what’s new hot and happening at M² Flooring & Design Center. We’d like to introduce you to the newest additions to our showroom from Kentwood Originals Urban Plank collection of Metropolitan Hardwood Floors. These additions consist of 6 wire brushed oak, 7 1/2″ wide engineered hardwood floors. Available in 6 gorgeous neutral earth tones, and a wire brushed finish, which adds a subtle distressed texture to the surface of the wood. Wire brushing, which is currently a very popular finish in the hardwood world, is a technique one can find used on Red and White oaks, Hickory, or Ash, but most popular seems to be Oak which you can find a number of different examples of this style in our showroom. The process is exactly what the name implies; to achieve this finish, a brush made of wire is taken to the surface of the wood, removing the softest parts between the grain, leaving behind the hardest most durable surface of the wood.

It’s been a busy season, and we’ve been spending it diligently creating beauty indoors with beautiful hardwood floors,  (enjoying the comfort of air conditioning mind you), while appreciating the all the sunshine we’ve been having this summer season in the city outdoors. We wanted to share with you our latest feature in Reno and Decor Magazine’s August/September 2016 issue, which has us very excited, since the September issue for many magazines is definitely one to watch out for moving into the new design and decor season. For this issue Mary dishes on all the good little tidbits of information to help educate and simplify tackling one of the most popular trends in hardwood flooring to date; grey hardwood flooring.  Just because we love and appreciate all our clients and supporters of both this blog and of M² Flooring & Design Center we’ve posted the article here in its entirety for your viewing pleasure. You can check out the actual article, which we think looks pretty darn good if you ask us, on page 40 of Reno and Decor Magazine here or in store. Check it out below!

Cottage in the City

The breeze that carries with it the sweet smell of the lake or ocean, the feel of mother nature underfoot at you walk in the jungle, the sound of little birds chirping in the trees, only to be heard and not to be seen, being one with mother nature. These are the reasons most of us gravitate to a cottage life. Just an hour or so outside of the hustle and bustle of the city is a world of peace and tranquility. The rules of life seem different in cottage country. Life is not as fast paced and you can find yourself just taking a relaxing breath.
